Get a smooth and shiny bottom on your boat

Have you also experienced that your boat's bottom paint is starting to peel off? It's a common problem, especially when several layers of paint have been applied over the years. But don't despair! With a little patience and the right tools, you can easily sand your bottom and make it look like new again.

Why sand the primer?

When the antifouling starts to peel off, it can affect the boat's hydrodynamics and increase drag in the water. It can also be a breeding ground for algae and other marine organisms. By sanding the bottom, you remove the loose material and create a smooth surface that is ready for a new coat of antifouling.

If you have black self-polishing antifouling paint on the bottom, then we have created the perfect package for you, with everything you need to sand, prime and antifoul - see it here: Ultimate Antifouling Package - Remove Peeling Antifouling Paint and Get a Perfect Finish!

What do you need?

  • A good orbital sander: An orbital sander with suction makes the work easier and less dusty.
  • Sandpaper: We recommend Abralnet discs from Mirka as they are effective and gentle on the surface.
  • Waterline tape: Use a good waterline tape to delineate the areas you need to sand.
  • Protective equipment: Always remember to use gloves, glasses, mask and hearing protection.
  • Antifouling: Choose a quality antifouling that suits your boat type and your sailing habits.

How to do it:

  1. Prepare the boat: Clean the bottom thoroughly of dirt and algae.
  2. Mask off: Use waterline tape to delineate the areas you need to sand.
  3. Sanding: Start with a coarser grit and switch to a finer grit to achieve a smooth surface.
  4. Clean: Remove all dust and sanding debris.
  5. Paint: Apply a new coat of antifouling paint.

Tips:

  • Work systematically: Divide the bottom into smaller areas and sand one area at a time.
  • Keep the sandpaper clean: Change the sandpaper regularly to achieve the best results.
  • Take breaks: Sanding can be physically demanding, so remember to take breaks.
