Which boat paint should I choose?
There is a huge range of boat paints on the market, so it can be difficult to choose the right one. It is important to choose a paint that suits your boat and your budget. We have a large selection of boat paints from some of the best brands on the market. Our selection includes paints for wood, aluminum, steel and fiberglass boats, so you can be sure to find the right type of paint for your boat project.
Paint above the waterline
There is a big difference between whether your boat needs to be painted on the bottom or whether what you are looking for is paint for above the waterline. Here at the shop you will find paint for below and above the waterline – but remember the preparation! The surface must be clean and free of algae, dirt and old paint so that you can get the best result. Please use protective equipment if you are going to start the big sanding project. Cleaning, sanding and priming are important when you are going to paint above the waterline – to give you and your boat the best result.
Paint for below the waterline – antifouling
We have a huge selection of antifouling paints in the store – you can see the large selection here. The most commonly used type of antifouling paint is the self-polishing antifouling paint – where the antifouling paint partially dissolves and polishes the surface during sailing. Here in the store you will find branded products from manufacturers such as International, Jotun and Hempel – our experience as a marine center is that cheap antifouling paints do not keep the bottom of the boat clean in the same way as the well-known branded products. It is a lot of work to antifoul a boat – therefore we recommend that you choose an antifouling paint that keeps your boat clean and free of algae all season.
Just like painting above the waterline – the preparation for painting below the waterline is important. The first part of the process starts when the boat comes ashore in the fall! Feel free to use a high-pressure cleaner so you can remove algae and dirt before the boat is covered for the winter season. Did you know that you could bottom paint your boat in the fall? With Jotun's NonStop you can actually bottom paint your boat up to 9 months before launching. Are you going to be the first in the harbor this year?
How do I prepare my boat for painting?
To prepare a boat for painting, you must first make sure that the surface is completely clean and free of algae, dirt and other debris. It is important to remove all old layers of boat paint, rust, oil, grease, wax - the substrate must be ready for a new layer of primer or boat paint before you apply anything new. This way you will get the best result. Then you need to sand the surface to ensure that it is smooth and even. Finally, you need to remove dust and dirt from the surface and rinse with fresh water - so you are ready to start painting. We have a large selection of antifouling paints from well-known brands so you can get the best finish.
Psst – here at the marine center in Næstved we can rinse boats with sea water and rainwater. We collect rainwater in rainwater barrels, and use a high-pressure cleaner to clean the boats on site with rainwater or sea water from Næstved Canal. Good for the boats and better for the environment.
