Luff and Luff Lines: Precision and Performance for Your Sails
Luffs and halyards are essential for safe and efficient sailing. They are significantly different from sheets, and it is essential not to confuse the two. Where sheets are used to trim sails sideways, halyards are designed to raise and hold your sails – mainsail, genoa and spinnaker – up.
Minimize Stretch for Maximum Control: The primary requirement for halyards is minimal stretch. Too much stretch in your halyards will cause the sails to “sag” and lose their ideal shape, reducing both performance and maneuverability. Therefore, halyards are typically divided into two categories based on their stretch:
Ultra-low stretch: These halyards have a stretch capability of less than 2%. They are ideal for performance-oriented sailors where every percent counts to achieve optimal sail shape and speed.
Medium stretch: With a stretch capability of less than 5%, these halyards offer an excellent balance of performance and price, suitable for most recreational sailors who want reliability and good control.
