Aluminum anodes can replace traditional zinc anodes. Aluminum anodes have some advantages over traditional zinc anodes. The alloy that the aluminum anode is made of has a greater negative charge than zinc, as well as a longer lifespan, which means that the anode is more active and over a longer period of time.
In total, an aluminum anode produces approximately 70% more Amp/Hours over its lifetime than a comparable traditional zinc anode. As a side benefit, you halve the weight and save a little on the price.
NB: There must be no physical connection between aluminium and zinc anodes, as the aluminium anode will protect the zinc anode, therefore all anodes on e.g. drives and outboard motors must be either aluminium or zinc. Aluminium can be used in both saltwater and brackishwater.
Many manufacturers use aluminum anodes as standard today on their new engines and boats, for example Mercruiser, Mercury, Yanmar, Selva, Torqeedo, Princess and Sunseeker.
