This lifebuoy from CAN-SB is the Ponza model in a classic design. It is a ring-shaped maritime buoyancy aid to support a person in the water and has a nominal weight of 3 kg. The trade dimension is 75/44 cm, while the certified diameters are 736 mm externally and 436 mm internally.
The lifebuoy has an outer shell of high-density polyethylene with a documented shell thickness of 2 mm. The buoyancy filling consists of closed-cell polyurethane foam, and the orange buoy is equipped with reflective tape as well as a braided polyethylene grab line with a diameter of 10 mm. The elliptical cross-section measures 150 × 100 mm within specified production tolerances.
The product is MED-type approved for maritime safety equipment and meets the requirements of the Marine Equipment Directive 2014/90/EU. The type approval includes, among other things, SOLAS 74, the LSA Code, and IMO Resolution MSC.81(70) as amended. The associated RINA certificate MED126023CS/001 is indicated as valid until 8 March 2028, provided that the approval conditions and production controls are maintained.
The buoy is intended for commercial vessels sailing both within and outside straits, as well as for recreational craft in accordance with the Italian Ministerial Decree D.M. 385/99. It has been tested for dropping from 60 m and has a maximum documented installation and drop height of 60 m. It is not intended to activate a quick-release device for a self-activating smoke signal and self-igniting light.
The lifebuoy should be visually inspected before departure and regularly according to the vessel's safety procedures. Check, among other things, the shell, deformation, grab line, reflective tape, marking, and signs of water ingress. It must be seated securely in its holder, while still being able to be released quickly. Under normal outdoor maritime conditions, a maximum service life of five years from the installation date is recommended, after which the product should be carefully evaluated for replacement. The stainless steel mounting bracket CAN-SB GA2363 is model-specific for the Ponza, while the 30 m long buoyant line with item no. 22.407.05 can be used as general lifebuoy accessory.
