This GUIDI Mediterraneo seawater strainer for engine cooling is model 1162.220013 with 4″ parallel BSPP connections. The strainer cleans incoming seawater or raw water before it is fed to the engine heat exchanger, generators, marine air conditioning systems, and other water-cooled installations on board.
The filter housing is made of nickel-plated bronze and features a transparent Lexan polycarbonate lid, allowing the filter basket to be checked visually without first opening the housing. The internal filter basket is made of 316L stainless steel, while the lid and drain plug are sealed with neoprene O-rings. The filter is not intended as a pre-filter in a fuel system.
The straight water passage directs the flow from side to side through the strainer. The rounded lower part of the housing is designed to reduce pressure loss at the outlet, optimize water flow, and limit air bubbles and cavitation. With a clean filter, the capacity is 103,000 l/h at 0.1 bar pressure loss and 326,000 l/h at 1 bar pressure loss. The maximum pressure is 4 bar.
The product's documented main dimensions are 340 mm in length and 355 mm in height, while the drawing dimension H1 is 256 mm. Additional drawing dimensions are A 231 mm and L1 145 mm. The thread is a 4″ parallel pipe thread according to ISO 228/1 (BS 2779), BSPP.
The strainer is mounted with the feet firmly anchored to a horizontal surface and with the flow in the direction of the arrows on the filter housing. Mounting above the waterline is recommended as a passive safety measure. There must also be sufficient clearance to remove the filter basket, and the strainer must be potential-equalized after installation to limit galvanic influence. The indicative tightening torque for the lid is approx. 9 Nm.
The polycarbonate lid version is RINA DIP type-approved for, among other things, CE-certified recreational craft and privately used RINA-classified vessels under 300 GT. The series also has Lloyd's Register type approval. The product is intended for integration into onboard installations and is not subject to independent CE marking under Directive 2013/53/EU.
Maintenance
Seacocks must be closed before opening the strainer. The filter basket should be checked regularly for fouling, plastic, and other debris and can be cleaned with water and compressed air. Worn gaskets must be replaced, and the lid and O-ring should be replaced together if the lid leaks, ages, or loses transparency. After a new installation, inspection and possible cleaning are recommended after a few hours of operation.
