Split Bolt / Rig Bolt – Essential Attachment to the Rig in AISI 316 Stainless Steel
A Split Bolt or Rig Bolt is a crucial component of your boat's rig, indispensable for the secure attachment of stays and turnbuckles. These bolts ensure that your rig remains properly tensioned and stable in all sailing conditions. And with AISI 316 (A4) acid-resistant stainless steel , you are assured of long durability and corrosion resistance even in the harshest marine environments.
What is a Split Bolt / Rig Bolt? A split bolt is a solid metal bolt used to connect and secure elements of a boat's rig. It is designed with a hole in one end where a split or rigging pin is inserted to lock the bolt in place and prevent it from slipping out.
Areas of application:
- Turnbuckles: The split pin is passed through the turnbuckle eye and a suitable fitting (e.g. a cleat) on the boat. The split pin is then inserted to lock the connection.
- Forestay: Used to attach the forestay that holds the mast forward.
- Backstay: Used to attach the backstay that supports the mast aft.
- Miters: Secures the mittens (side stays) that provide lateral stability to the mast.
Function and Safety: By passing the bolt through both the shroud/stay and the cleat (or other attachment point) and then inserting the split pin into the hole, an extremely strong and secure connection is achieved. This prevents the rig from coming loose while sailing, and is essential for the safety of both the boat and the crew.
