This Ritchie Explorer magnetic compass with 70 mm card is model B-51 in a black finish with a black, direct-reading compass card. The complete marine compass comes with an adjustable mounting bracket and is designed for placement at the helm of powerboats up to 24 ft / 7.32 m.
The compass card features 5° graduations and is supported by a scientifically matched sapphire jewel movement with a hardened steel pivot. The DirectiveForce magnets are designed for rapid stabilization on course, while the built-in compensators allow for the correction of fixed magnetic deviation. A movable sun shield improves readability under changing light conditions.
The internal green night lighting operates on 12 V DC and makes the compass card visible in the dark. The electrical connection must be made via an appropriately fused circuit; for a separate compass circuit, a 1 A fast-acting AGC glass fuse is recommended.
The mounting bracket has thumbscrews, allowing the compass to be leveled fore and aft or removed from the bracket. For horizontal mounting, the surface must be level from side to side. For bulkhead mounting, the bulkhead must be perpendicular to the boat's centerline; otherwise, a suitable wedge must be used. Use non-magnetic fasteners and check the mounting location for interference from speakers, wiper motors, live cables, and other magnetic objects.
The compass is manufactured in a high-temperature resistant composite construction and measures a maximum of 116 mm in width and 119 mm in total height. The model is fully repairable and comes with a five-year manufacturer's warranty. Documented spare parts include, among others, light source EX-0005/EX-0005-2, lamp socket EX-0022 ASY, sun shield EX-0034, compass unit EX-0006 ASY, housing EX-0013, mounting bracket EX-0004/EX-0004 XSP, and thumbscrew SH-0077 ASY.
Rinse salt and dirt off with clean fresh water and wipe gently with a damp cloth. Chemical and abrasive cleaning agents must not be used. Deviation should be checked at the start of each sailing season and after installing new equipment in the vicinity of the compass.
