This Ritchie Explorer 70 mm marine compass with compensators and night lighting is model F-50W for flush mounting at the helm of motorboats. This variant has a white housing, white compass card, and direct front-reading.
The 70 mm large, direct-reading card features 5° graduation. The card mechanism is built with a sapphire jewel bearing, hardened steel pivot, and DirectiveForce magnets, which contribute to rapid stabilization on course. Built-in magnetic compensators allow for adjustment of fixed deviation, and the movable sun shield improves readability under changing light conditions.
The compass has a temperature-resistant composite construction and a factory-sealed dome, card, and bowl capsule. It is equipped with green 12 V night lighting for reading in the dark. The lighting should be connected to a suitably fused circuit, such as the circuit for navigation or position lights.
The external flange measures 124 mm in diameter. The compass extends 47 mm above the mounting surface and requires a mounting depth of 57 mm. The cutout diameter is 95.3 mm, and the bolt circle is 107.7 mm.
Mounting must be performed on a flat and horizontal surface with the compass centerline parallel to the boat's centerline. Use non-magnetic screws or bolts along with the mounting gasket. For a curved or inclined surface, the compass must be shimmed so that it stands level. Avoid sealant around the compass, and place it away from speakers, magnets, iron, steel, and current-carrying components that could affect the reading.
Deviation should be checked after installation, at the start of the season, and after installing electrical or magnetic equipment nearby. Rinse salt and dirt off with fresh water, then gently wipe the surface with a damp cloth. Chemical and abrasive cleaning agents must not be used. The compass is designed for service and repair and comes with a 5-year manufacturer's warranty.
