This Ritchie Explorer marine compass with 70 mm dial is model S-53G for surface mounting on powerboats. The grey housing and blue dial are combined with direct reading and 5° graduations, allowing the course to be read from the helm.
The compass features green 12 V DC night lighting and built-in compensators to correct for fixed deviation. Two sets of correction magnets are adjusted via compensator rods and can correct up to 20° of fixed deviation on cardinal headings, provided the mounting location is not affected by variable magnetic fields.
The temperature-resistant composite housing features a compact low-profile design, a movable sun shield, and a compass movement with a tuned sapphire jewel bearing and hardened steel pivot. DirectiveForce magnets contribute to fast stabilization of the heading display. The compass module can be released from the base with push buttons, allowing it to be removed for storage or theft prevention.
The product's maximum diameter is 93 mm and the total height is 73 mm. The compass must be mounted on a flat, horizontal surface close to the helmsman's normal line of sight and aligned accurately with the boat's centerline. The base's elongated mounting holes allow for fine-tuning the alignment after positioning the fasteners.
Self-adhesive mounting pads are included as an alternative to drilling. Mounting screws are not included and must be selected based on the mounting surface. Use non-magnetic fasteners and avoid placement near high-current cables, windshield wipers, speakers, and other magnetic or current-carrying components. The lighting wire can be routed through the back or down through the bottom and connected to a suitably fused 12 V circuit with no polarity requirement.
Rinse off salt and dirt with clean fresh water, then wipe the compass gently with a damp cloth. Do not use chemical or abrasive cleaners. Deviation should be checked every 30° after installation, at the beginning of each sailing season, and after the installation of any new equipment near the compass.
