This Ritchie Explorer marine compass with a 70 mm compass card is model S-53 for surface or deck mounting. The variant has a black housing, black compass card, and a direct-reading dial. The compass is designed for marine heading indication and is recommended for powerboats up to 24 ft, corresponding to approx. 7.32 m.
The magnetic compass movement uses a tuned sapphire jewel bearing with a hardened steel pivot and DirectiveForce magnets, which contribute to rapid heading stabilization. Built-in compensators allow for the correction of fixed deviation, while a movable sun shield improves protection of the compass card.
The housing is made of temperature-resistant composite material. The compass has an outer diameter of 93 mm and a total height of 73 mm. The removable compass module is released with push buttons and can be detached from the base for storage or protection against theft.
The built-in green LED night illumination is designed for 12 V and should be connected to a suitably fused circuit. The illumination wire can be routed to the rear or down through the base, and polarity is not critical. The compass must be mounted level and parallel to the boat's centerline using non-magnetic mounting hardware. The base's elongated holes allow for final directional adjustment, and self-adhesive mounting pads are included as an alternative to drilling. Mounting screws are not included.
The mounting location should be kept free of fluctuating magnetic fields from, for example, high-current cables, windshield wipers, and certain steering systems. The location should be tested with the boat's electrical equipment and steering both activated and deactivated before final attachment. Deviation should be checked at the start of each sailing season and after the installation of new equipment near the compass.
The compass is cleaned with fresh water and a damp cloth without chemical or abrasive cleaners.
