Ritchie Helmsman 3¾″ magnetic compass with compensators and night lighting is a white, flush-mount compass for powerboats and sailboats. The HF-743W model features a white combination dial that can be read both directly from the front and from above, as well as built-in 12 V LED night lighting.
The combination dial has a nominal diameter of 3¾″ (94 mm) and 5° graduations. A main lubber line at 0° and additional lubber lines at 45° make it possible to follow the course from different viewing angles. The movable sun shield can be adjusted to the light conditions around the helm.
The compass is manufactured in high-temperature composite and features DirectiveForce magnets, a matched sapphire jewel bearing, and a hardened steel pivot. The internal gimbal system stabilizes the dial during boat pitching and rolling, while the liquid-damped, factory-sealed capsule contributes to steady and fast course readings. The construction is field-repairable, and relevant capsule, lighting, and front components can be replaced.
The front has a maximum outer diameter of 131 mm. The compass protrudes 62 mm above the mounting surface and requires a mounting depth of 57 mm. Standard installation is in a Ø102 mm round cutout; mounting template HL-0231 has a bolt circle of 117.4 mm. The compass centerline must be installed parallel to the boat's centerline on a flat, horizontal mounting surface.
The night lighting consists of two green NiteVu LED light sources: one at the front reading area and one in the sun shield. Both connect to a suitably fused 12 V DC circuit. For a separate compass circuit, a fast-acting 1 A AGC glass fuse can be used; the value refers to the fuse rating and is not the compass's documented power consumption.
The built-in compensators are used to correct fixed deviation of up to approximately 15°. The mounting location should therefore be chosen away from speakers, iron and steel parts, current-carrying cables, wiper motors, and other equipment that may create magnetic fields. After installation, the deviation should be checked every 30° and recorded in a deviation table. The check should be repeated at the start of the season and after installing new equipment nearby.
The included mounting gasket must be used, and sealant should be avoided, as certain products may damage the compass. Mounting screws and other hardware must be non-magnetic. Remove salt and dirt with clean fresh water and a damp cloth without chemical or abrasive cleaners. The compass is manufactured in the USA and comes with a five-year manufacturer's warranty against defects in materials and workmanship.
Documented accessories and spare parts
H-AWHT is a white retrofit adapter for the HF-743W and can be used with existing 4¼″-5″ mounting holes. H-741-C is a separate protective cover, while HL-0219 is the standard mounting gasket for installation without an adapter. A complete capsule with a white combination dial has spare part no. HL-0225 XWC, and the green 12 V front lighting is available as SH-0194 KIT.
