Magnetic boat compass from the Ritchie Helmsman series, model HF-742, is a flush-mount compass for powerboats and sailboats. It features a black composite construction, a 3¾″ black flat open-face compass card, and built-in green NiteVu LED night lighting for 12 V DC.
The compass is read from above and is equipped with 45° lubber lines and a movable sun shield. The DirectiveForce magnets are designed for rapid stabilization on course, while PowerDamp damping reduces rotation and oscillation of the compass card during speed and heavy seas. The movement utilizes a hardened steel pivot and a custom sapphire jewel bearing.
The outer diameter above the mounting surface is 131 mm, the height above the mounting surface is 62 mm, and the mounting depth is 57 mm. The mounting hole must be 102 mm in diameter. The mounting template also specifies a bolt circle of 117.4 mm. The compass is mounted on a flat, horizontal surface with the centerline parallel to the boat's centerline.
The built-in compensators are used for correcting fixed magnetic deviation. The location should have less than 15° of deviation at each of the four cardinal points and must be kept clear of variable magnetic fields from, for example, wiper motors, live cables, and speakers. Use non-magnetic mounting screws and the included gasket; sealants are discouraged, as certain products can damage the compass.
The night lighting is connected to an appropriately fused 12 V DC circuit. For a separate circuit, a fast-acting 1 A AGC glass fuse is recommended. Wire polarity depends on the cable version, and connection must therefore follow the color or wire markings on the installed cable.
For retrofitting into larger mounting holes from older black HF-72 and HF-73 compasses, the separate adapter ring H-ABLK can be used together with gasket HL-0105. Other documented spare parts and accessories include standard gasket HL-0219, protective cover H-741-C, black replacement capsule HL-0289 KIT, and green 12 V replacement light kit SH-0195 KIT.
The construction is repairable and comes with a 5-year manufacturer's warranty. For maintenance, rinse salt and dirt off with fresh water, then wipe the surface gently with a damp cloth. Chemical and abrasive cleaners must not be used.
