Ritchie Navigator 4½″ marine compass model FN-201 is a magnetic steering compass for flush-mount installation in a flat, horizontal surface. This variant features a black housing, a black flat compass card with white markings, and top reading, making it suitable for installations where the compass is read from above.
The nominal 4½″ compass card measures 114 mm and features large numbers as well as additional 45° steering lines. The PowerDamp dial dampens rotation and bouncing of the compass card at high speed and in heavy seas, while DirectiveForce magnets contribute to rapid stabilization on course. The compass also features internal gimbaling, a sapphire jewel bearing, and a hardened steel pivot.
Integrated green NiteVu LED night lighting is powered by 12 V DC. For a separate power supply to the compass, a 1 A AGC fast-acting glass fuse and an electrical circuit rated for 1 A are recommended. The built-in compensators are used to correct for fixed deviation, and the movable black sun shield protects the compass card from distracting light.
The compass has an outer diameter of 154 mm, a height of 67 mm above the mounting surface, and a mounting depth of 76 mm. The lower mounting housing has a diameter of 132 mm. The permissible cutout diameter is 120.6-130.2 mm, and the bolt circle for the mounting screws is 137.4 mm. Use the 1:1 mounting template NV-0076 and the included mounting gasket for installation.
The mounting location must be parallel to the boat's centerline and positioned so that the deviation is at most 15° at each of the four cardinal points before compensation. Keep the compass away from fluctuating magnetic fields from sources such as wiper motors, live cables, speakers, and iron or steel parts. Use non-magnetic fasteners, and avoid sealant around the compass, as certain chemicals can damage the construction.
The compass is designed to be repairable, and a 5-year manufacturer's warranty is provided on the magnetic marine compass. Documented accessories include protective cover N-203-C, mounting gasket NV-0175, and mounting template NV-0076. The green 12 V replacement light has spare part number SH-0176 XSP. Rinse off salt and dirt with fresh water, wipe with a damp cloth, and avoid chemical or abrasive cleaning agents. Deviation should be checked at the start of each sailing season and after installing new equipment near the compass.
