Ritchie Navigator 4½″ marine compass is a magnetic compass for pedestal or binnacle mounting on powerboats and sailboats. The model features open-top reading, a black PowerDamp compass card with large numerals, and 45° lubber lines, allowing the course to be read directly from the helm.
The nominal compass card size is 4½″ (114 mm). Built-in compensators allow for the correction of fixed deviation, while the PowerDamp design stabilizes the compass card in marine conditions. An adjustable sun shield can be positioned according to light conditions.
The compass features green LED night lighting for 12 V DC. The external cylindrical binnacle is made of silver-colored stainless steel, while the compass unit and compass card are black. The total product dimensions are Ø165 mm in diameter and 154 mm in height.
Mounting is performed using four attachment points on a 133.3 mm bolt circle. The compass centerline must be placed parallel to the boat's centerline with the lubber line facing the bow. The mounting surface must be flat and horizontal, and non-magnetic fasteners must be used. Depending on the make of the steering pedestal, an adapter or additional mounting parts may be required.
The compass should be positioned so that the helmsman has a clear view and to avoid variable magnetic fields from engines, heavy cables, and magnetic components. The built-in correction magnets are adjusted using a small non-magnetic screwdriver. Deviation should be checked at the start of each sailing season and after installing new equipment nearby.
The Navigator model is designed to be repairable and comes with a five-year manufacturer's warranty. Salt and dirt should be removed with clean fresh water and a damp cloth; chemical and abrasive cleaners should not be used. Compatible accessories include the N-203-C protective cover, WS-P weather shield, and SH-0176 XSP 12 V green LED light kit, which are sold separately.
