Ritchie Navigator 4½″ magnetic compass in Wheelmark version is a liquid-damped class B marine magnetic compass for pedestal mounting. Model DNB-200-WM features a black powder-coated stainless steel housing, a black PowerDamp dial, and an open, flat card design with large numerals. The compass is intended for lifeboats and rescue vessels and is also type-tested for workboats.
The 4½″ dial has 45° lubber lines and dual green LED lighting for 12 V DC. A sliding sun shield improves readability under changing light conditions. Built-in compensator magnets allow for the correction of fixed deviation when the compass is installed and compensated correctly.
The compass is 154 mm high and has an external base diameter of 165 mm. Mounting is performed on a flat, horizontal surface or on top of a steering pedestal. The bolt circle diameter is 133.3 mm, and mounting template NV-0075 Rev. D has holes that fit most steering pedestals. However, an adapter or separate mounting hardware may be required depending on the pedestal. The compass centerline must be mounted parallel to the boat's centerline.
The mounting location must be kept clear of magnets, iron, steel, and current-carrying equipment that may create deviation. Use non-magnetic mounting hardware and check the deviation after installation, at the start of each sailing season, and after installing new equipment nearby. When accessing the mounting base, do not loosen the screws closest to the dome, as compass fluid may leak out.
The LED lighting can be connected to a separate circuit with a fast 1 A AGC glass fuse. Polarity depends on the cable type supplied: On black zip cable, the conductor with the white stripe is positive; on gray zip cable, the copper-colored strands are positive; and on black jacketed cable, the red conductor is positive. The other conductors are connected to ground or negative.
The Wheelmark approval is based on MED Module B certificate DK-MED000098, Issue 05, for class B magnetic compasses. The certification basis includes, among others, the Marine Equipment Directive 2014/90/EU, SOLAS, LSA Code, ISO 1069:1973, IEC 60945:2002, and ISO 25862:2019 including A1:2024. The type approval does not cover ISO 25862 testing of a Type A2 binnacle. The compass is manufactured in the USA, is repairable, and comes with a 5-year warranty against defects in material and workmanship. Clean with fresh water and a damp cloth without chemical or abrasive cleaners. Protective cover N-203-C, weather shield WS-P, and green 12 V LED unit SH-0176 XSP are available separately.
