This Ritchie SuperSport flush-mount compass is a magnetic steering compass for offshore racing boats. The SS-1002W variant features a white housing, a blue compass card with a nominal diameter of 3¾", and large white numerals that provide clear course readings.
The PowerDamp Plus system uses a special skirt construction around the flat, open compass card to reduce oscillation. DirectiveForce magnets contribute to rapid stabilization on course, while large steel pivots and jewel bearings support quick and smooth movement. Built-in compensators allow for the correction of fixed deviation after installation.
The compass has integrated green 12 V DC LED lighting in the movable sunshield. The lighting should be connected to a suitably fused 12 V circuit; for an independent compass circuit, a fast-acting 1 A AGC glass fuse is recommended. The fuse rating indicates circuit protection and not the power consumption of the light.
The compass is mounted flush in a flat, horizontal surface at the helm. It requires a 4" (approx. 102 mm) round cutout, while the external bezel measures approx. 131 mm. The height above the mounting surface is approx. 62 mm, and the mounting depth is approx. 57 mm. The bolt circle for the mounting screws is approx. 117.4 mm.
During installation, the compass's centerline must be placed parallel to the boat's centerline, and the lubber line must point forward. The mounting location must be kept away from magnets, iron, steel, and current-carrying equipment that can create deviation. Use the included mounting gasket and non-magnetic fasteners; sealant is discouraged, as certain products may damage the compass. After mounting, the compass must be compensated, and the deviation should be checked regularly as well as after the installation of new equipment nearby.
The model features a factory-sealed dome, card, and bowl assembly and is designed to be repairable. Compatible service and accessory parts include the blue replacement capsule HL-0290 KIT, mounting gasket HL-0219, protective cover H-741-C, and green 12 V LED unit SH-0195 KIT. The white adapter H-AWHT can be used for retrofitting in existing holes of approx. 4¼–5". The compass is covered by a 5-year warranty against defects in material and workmanship according to the applicable warranty terms.
To clean, rinse salt and dirt off with clean fresh water, then wipe the surface gently with a damp cloth. Chemical or abrasive cleaners must not be used.
