This Ritchie Voyager 3″ magnetic compass with combined front/top reading is the F-83 model for flush mounting in a flat, horizontal surface. The black CombiDamp compass dial can be read both from the front and from above, providing flexible positioning relative to the normal steering position.
The compass has a nominal dial diameter of 3″ / 76 mm. The scale is graduated every 5°, with numbers every 30° and cardinal and intercardinal points every 45°. Built-in compensators can correct fixed deviation up to approximately 15°, while DirectiveForce magnets, a sapphire jewel bearing, and a hardened steel pivot contribute to fast and stable heading indications.
The integrated green NiteVu night lighting uses two separate LED light units and is designed for 12 V DC. Both lights can be connected to the same fused circuit. For a separate circuit for the compass, a 1 A fast-acting AGC glass fuse is recommended.
The housing is made of high-temperature-resistant composite material and features a black front flange, a black housing, and a movable sunshield. The outer diameter across the mounting flange is 133 mm. The compass protrudes 51 mm above the mounting surface and requires a mounting depth of 33 mm. The mounting hole must be 107 mm in diameter, the bolt circle is 121.9 mm, and the mounting has four attachment points.
The centerline must be mounted parallel to the boat's centerline, and the mounting surface must be level when the boat is on an even keel. For a curved or sloping surface, a suitable shim block is required. The included mounting gasket must be used, and the fasteners must be non-magnetic. Do not use sealant around the compass, as certain products may damage the construction.
Choose a mounting location with the least possible influence from electrical equipment, wipers, steering, and other magnetic sources. Check the location with the equipment both on and off, and ensure access to the compensator rods. Deviation should be checked at the beginning of each sailing season and after installing new equipment near the compass.
The F-83 is made in the USA, is serviceable, and comes with a 5-year warranty against defects in materials and workmanship according to the warranty terms. Clean with fresh water and a damp cloth; chemical or abrasive cleaning agents must not be used. The model is the standard version F-83 and not the separate Wheelmark model F-83-WM.
