This Riviera Astra BAS1 4″ overhead mount magnetic compass is a hemispherical marine compass in the standard version with a white housing and black compass card. It is designed for flush ceiling installation above or in front of the helm station, allowing unused ceiling space to be utilized when the dashboard is occupied by screens, controls, and other instruments.
The compass features direct reading, a red lubber line, and a compass card with 5° graduations. The apparent diameter of the compass card is 100 mm (4″), while the actual diameter is 84 mm. Internal gimbal suspension and universal balance stabilize the reading, and the anti-glare screen reduces distracting reflections.
The integrated 12 V lighting uses blue LEDs, allowing the compass card to be read in low-light conditions. The compass also features built-in magnetic compensation. The internal construction includes two magnets with a magnetic moment of 0.270 A·m² as well as EXXSOL D80 compass fluid.
The compass bowl is made of glass-fiber reinforced nylon, while the spherical dome is made of polycarbonate. The maximum outer flange diameter is 168 mm, and the cylindrical section that inserts into the ceiling has a diameter of 126.3 mm. The construction protrudes 58 mm above the mounting surface and 64 mm below the mounting surface. The 126.3 mm dimension is the component's diameter and not a specified cutout dimension including mounting tolerance.
The Astra BAS1 is intended for both pleasure craft and workboats. This variant is the standard version and should not be confused with the product family's separate high-speed version. The construction is dismantlable and repairable, and the compass is manufactured in Italy. The manufacturer's part number is 62.00854.02, and the warranty period for new compasses is 3 years.
The ASTRA 4″ BAS1 construction is covered by type certificate MED208723CS and is classified as a class B magnetic compass for lifeboats and rescue boats. Type testing includes ISO 1069:1973, ISO 25862:2019, and IEC 60945:2002 with corrigendum 1:2008. Individual MED certification of the supplied unit must be ordered with the compass and cannot be assumed for a standard stock unit.
