Riviera BW1 5″ flush-mount compass in the White Star 5″ series is a magnetic marine compass for the merchant navy and fishing vessels. This BW1 variant features a 130 mm visible compass card, precise 2° graduation, and is supplied with an individual RINA test certificate.
The compass features a black housing and black compass card, as well as rear reading with a white lubber line. Internal gimbal suspension stabilizes the reading, while the anti-glare screen reduces distracting reflections. The built-in manual compensation allows for correction of the vessel's magnetic influences.
The integrated LED lighting is designed for 24 V and has a blue light color. The electrical connection is made via two LED wires, and the voltage of the vessel's installation must be checked before connection.
The BW1 is flush-mounted in a horizontal console, deck, or navigation surface. The compass has an outer flange diameter of 180 mm, a recessed cylindrical housing with a diameter of 155 mm, and a total height of 182 mm. The installation depth is specified as 115 mm. Mounting is carried out using three Ø3 mm fastening holes on a Ø166 mm bolt circle; the model-specific mounting template should be used for the cutout.
The location must be chosen as far as possible from magnetic fields and moving ferrous objects. After installation, compensation must be performed by a professional authorized by the local maritime authority. The compensation screws are accessed through the lower transverse openings and should be operated with a non-magnetic screwdriver.
The compass uses Shell Sol D/70 compass fluid with a documented stable temperature range from –30 °C to +60 °C. An elastic membrane compensates for volume changes in the fluid and prevents bubble formation within the temperature range. Filling plugs and other screws must not be loosened.
The White Star 5″ design is repairable and should be cleaned with a soft cloth dampened with fresh water. Repairs should be carried out through the manufacturer's service to maintain safety and warranty terms. The manufacturer's warranty is 36 months from the production date on the flange. The model is covered by MED 2014/90/EU for White Star class B compasses, while an individual MED certificate must be ordered separately and is not documented as included. DM 587/200 is included.
