This Riviera Prisma BPS hand bearing compass is a magnetic, liquid-damped compass for handheld bearings against visible landmarks. The prismatic reading makes it possible to read the compass card while aiming the instrument at the landmark. The compass card has a visible diameter of 57.5 mm and graduations every 1°.
The compass system uses jewel and pivot suspension as well as liquid damping for a stable reading. An integrated air bubble trap and an elastic membrane absorb volume changes of the liquid during temperature variations and prevent the formation of air bubbles. The compass liquid is Shell Sol D/70, and the documented temperature range is −30 °C to +60 °C. The model does not have built-in magnetic compensation.
The large pistol-grip handle provides a secure grip during bearing. The included bracket has a quick-release bayonet coupling, so the compass can also be mounted vertically and used as a steering or course compass. The model is intended for both standard boats and high-speed vessels.
The built-in compass illumination is powered by a 1.5 V battery and activated by the button on the front of the handle. Both the bulb and battery can be replaced. Access is via the screw at the bottom of the handle, after which the lamp holder and battery can be pulled out using the internal cord.
The housing is black, while the compass card is white with black degree markings. The compass is manufactured in Italy and designed to be disassembled and serviced. Actual repairs must be performed by Riviera. The warranty period is 36 months from the date of manufacture, which is stamped on the product flange.
Clean the compass with a soft cloth dampened with fresh water, and avoid solvents and aggressive liquids. For long-term storage, the battery should be removed. A separate wooden box with item no. 25.065.03 or manufacturer no. 62.00106.01 as well as a padded fabric case with manufacturer no. 62.00105.01 can be used for storage and transport.
