This Riviera Urania 4" high-speed compass with binnacle and telescopic protective cover is model BU9 in a white finish with a blue compass card. The magnetic compass is designed for marine vessels with speeds over 25 knots and features a 100 mm visible compass card.
The blue compass card is graduated every 5° and has reverse reading and a clear red lubber line. An internal gimbal system stabilizes the compass, while the built-in manual compensation setting allows for correction of the vessel's magnetic influences. An anti-glare screen supports reading in changing light conditions, and the integrated lighting connects to 12 V.
The BU9 binnacle is designed for fixed, horizontal surface mounting. The housing is secured through four mounting holes with the included screws. The compass measures 157 mm in outer diameter and 157 mm in height. The telescopic protective cover is part of the design and protects the compass when not in use.
The compass contains Shell Sol D/70, a petroleum-based compass fluid that is stable from −30 °C to +60 °C. An elastic membrane compensates for volume changes in the fluid and prevents bubble formation within the temperature range. Filling plugs and construction screws must not be loosened; only the compensator screws may be adjusted with a non-magnetic screwdriver.
The mounting location should be chosen as far as practically possible from magnetic fields and moving ferrous parts. After installation, the compass must be compensated by a qualified professional. Cleaning is performed with a soft cloth moistened with fresh water. The compass is hand-built in Italy, fully repairable, and has a 3-year warranty from the date of manufacture under the applicable warranty terms. Repairs must be carried out by Riviera to maintain warranty and safety.
