This Riviera Urania 4″ flush-mount compass with telescopic protective cover is a magnetic marine compass for horizontal, flush mounting in a dashboard or console. The BU8 variant features top reading, a black housing, and a black compass card, and is suitable for both motorboats and sailboats.
The visible compass card has a diameter of 100 mm and a graduation of 5°. Readings are taken via a red lubber line, while an internal gimbal system stabilizes the compass while underway. This variant is intended for both standard speeds and vessels with a speed exceeding 25 knots.
The compass features an anti-glare screen, built-in manual compensation adjustment, and 12 V LED lighting. The telescopic cover encloses and protects the compass when not in use. The compass fluid is Shell Sol D/70, and an elastic membrane compensates for volume changes in the fluid within the temperature range of −30 °C to +60 °C.
The instrument measures 158 mm at its widest point and has a total height of 154 mm. The lower housing has a diameter of 110 mm. Mounting requires a Ø123 mm cutout as well as two Ø2.5 mm fixing holes placed approximately 132.9 mm center-to-center. The cover flange does not need to be removed during installation.
The compass is calibrated for geographical zone A. After mounting, compensation must be performed professionally using a non-magnetic screwdriver. Place the instrument as far as practically possible from magnetic fields and moving ferrous objects, and verify that the vessel's power supply corresponds to the compass's 12 V version.
The BU8 is manufactured in Italy and designed to be repairable. The warranty period is 36 months from the production date stamped on the flange. Clean the housing and cover with a soft cloth dampened with fresh water, and avoid loosening filling plugs or any screws other than the designated compensator screws.
