This Riviera Urania 4″ flush-mount compass with telescopic cover is a magnetic marine compass for horizontal, flush mounting in a steering console, dashboard, or similar horizontal surface. The BU8 variant features a white housing, a black flat compass card, and rear top-reading via a red lubber line.
The compass has a visible compass card diameter of 100 mm and 5° graduation. Internal gimbal suspension stabilizes the compass card, while the built-in manual compensation allows for correction of magnetic interference after installation. The anti-reflective screen supports clear reading, and the integrated 12 V LED lighting features white light on this variant.
The BU8 is suitable for both sailboats and motorboats, as well as for standard speed and high-speed vessels over 25 knots. The integrated telescopic cover protects the compass when not in use. The compass housing is made of composite material, and the compass liquid has a stable temperature range from −30 °C to +60 °C.
The compass has a maximum outer diameter of 158 mm and a total height of 154 mm. The submerged part is 72 mm high and has a diameter of 110 mm. Installation requires a cutout of Ø123 mm and two mounting holes of Ø2.5 mm. The compass is inserted through the cutout and secured with two screws, without the need to remove the cover flange.
The installation site must be chosen as far as possible from magnetic fields, moving ferrous objects, and other sources of magnetic interference. After installation, the compass must be compensated by an authorized professional. Furthermore, verify that the vessel's electrical system is 12 V before connecting the LED wires.
Maintenance is performed with a soft cloth dampened with fresh water. Filling screws and plugs must not be loosened, and compensator screws should only be adjusted with a non-magnetic screwdriver. The compass can be repaired, but repairs must be performed by the manufacturer for safety and warranty reasons. The manufacturer's warranty is 36 months from the manufacturing date on the flange.
