Riviera Urania BU1 4″ flush-mount compass is a magnetic, liquid-filled marine compass for the merchant fleet and fishing vessels. This version is supplied with an individual RINA test certificate for each compass and is intended for horizontal, flush-mounted installation in a console or panel.
The hemispherical compass card has a visible diameter of 100 mm and is read against a red lubber line. Internal gimbal suspension stabilizes the compass, while the built-in manual compensation allows for correction of the vessel's magnetic influence. The compensator screws are accessible through the lower transverse holes, and an anti-glare screen supports clear reading.
The compass has a maximum outer diameter of 162 mm and a total height of 159 mm. The mounting template specifies a cut-out hole of Ø137 mm and three mounting holes of Ø2.5 mm. The compass must be placed as far as practically possible from magnetic fields, moving iron masses, and other equipment that can interfere with the reading. After installation, compensation must be carried out by a professional authorized by the relevant maritime authority.
The compass bowl is made of nylon/fiberglass, while the spherical dome is made of polycarbonate. The design includes two main magnets with a magnetic moment of 0.270 A·m² and four magnets for compass adjustment. The compass fluid is Shell Sol D 70, and an elastic membrane compensates for volume changes in the fluid to prevent bubble formation at temperatures from −30 °C to +60 °C.
The built-in LED lighting is powered by 12 V and has blue light as standard. The Urania 4″ series is RINA type-approved for merchant and fishing vessels under 150 GT and has prototype approval DAP 588/2000. This certificate version is available by special order only.
Cleaning should be performed with a soft cloth dampened with fresh water. Filling plugs and screws must not be loosened, and the compensation should be adjusted with a non-magnetic screwdriver. The design is repairable, but repairs may only be performed by the manufacturer. The warranty period is 36 months from the date of manufacture, which is stamped on the flange.
