Riviera Urania BU2 4″ magnetic compass with binnacle is a liquid-filled, hemispherical steering compass for commercial and fishing vessels. This BU2 variant features a black housing, black compass card, 2° interval graduation, and comes with an individual RINA test certificate.
The compass has an apparent reading diameter of 4″/100 mm and a physical compass card diameter of 70.5 mm. Rear reading, a red lubber line, and a detachable anti-glare and sun visor provide a clear reference point for steering. The internal gimbal suspension helps the compass maintain its horizontal position as the vessel moves.
The compass bowl is made of glass fiber-reinforced nylon, while the spherical dome is made of polycarbonate. The construction includes two main magnets with a magnetic moment of 0.270 A·m² as well as four compensation magnets for manual magnetic compensation. The petroleum-based compass fluid and an elastic membrane are designed to keep the system bubble-free at temperatures from −30 °C to +60 °C.
The built-in blue LED lighting connects to 12 V. The binnacle is mounted on a horizontal surface through four mounting holes using the included screws. The product measures 176 mm in total height, 150 mm in maximum width at the top, and 157 mm at the base. The installation site should be located as far as practically possible from magnetic fields and moving ferrous objects.
After installation, the compass should be compensated by a qualified professional. The standard calibration is for magnetic zone A. The cross-elements of the compensation magnets should not be adjusted by untrained personnel, and the supply voltage must be checked before connecting the lighting.
The BU2 model is covered by RINA type certificate MED151722CS/001 with test references to ISO 1069:1973, ISO 25862:2019, and IEC 60945:2002 including Corr. 1:2008. The individual RINA test certificate that accompanies this variant should not be confused with an individual MED/Wheelmark certificate. Clean the compass with a soft cloth dampened with fresh water, and do not open filling plugs or sealing screws. The manufacturer's warranty is 36 months from the manufacturing date stamped on the flange, under the applicable warranty terms.
