Riviera Urania 4" flush-mount compass model BU3 is a magnetic marine compass for horizontal installation in steering pedestals and instrument panels. This variant is designed for sailboats with a sunshade or low bimini, where the red lubber line and compass card need to be read vertically from above.
The compass features a 100 mm compass card with 5° graduation, rear reading, and internal gimbal suspension. A built-in, manually adjustable compensation system allows for the correction of interference from the boat's magnetic fields after installation. The screen is anti-glare treated, and the integrated LED lighting is powered by 12 V and provides blue light.
The maximum outer diameter is 168 mm, the total height is 159 mm, and the depth below the mounting flange is 94 mm. The flush-mount section has a diameter of 125 mm. Installation requires a cutout of Ø155 mm as well as three Ø2 mm mounting holes positioned on an Ø137 mm bolt circle.
For installation, the decorative flange is carefully lifted off, after which the compass is placed in the cutout and secured through the mounting holes. The flange is then pressed back into place, and the Riviera logo must face the stern of the boat. The compass should be mounted as far as practically possible from magnetic fields and moving ferrous objects. After installation, it must be compensated by a qualified professional.
The compass contains the petroleum-based fluid Shell Sol D/70. An elastic membrane compensates for volume changes in the fluid and prevents bubble formation within the fluid's documented temperature range of −30 °C to +60 °C. Filling plugs and other screws must not be loosened; only the compensator screws may be adjusted with a non-magnetic screwdriver.
The construction is fully repairable, but repairs must be carried out by Riviera to maintain the warranty and safety. Cleaning is performed with a soft cloth dampened with fresh water. The product has a 3-year manufacturer's warranty from the date of production. This BU3 variant is not supplied with an individual RINA or MED certificate.
