Riviera Urania BU4 4″ magnetic compass is a liquid-filled navigation compass for mounting on a steering pedestal or steering column on sailboats with a low sun shield. The compass features a visible, 100 mm black compass card, 5° graduations, and a rear-reading lubber line in red.
The internal gimbal system keeps the compass stable during the vessel's movement. Built-in magnetic compensation allows for the correction of magnetic deviation via two compensator systems positioned 90° apart. This model is factory-balanced for Zone A, which primarily covers the Northern Hemisphere.
The black compass is equipped with an anti-glare screen and has a total height of 163 mm. The upper maximum width is 150 mm, while the base diameter is 157 mm. The compass stand is mounted on top of a console, deck, or steering pedestal and secured through four base holes. Mounting screws are included.
The integrated LED lighting connects to the boat’s 12 V system via two wires. The compass fluid is Shell Sol D/70, and an elastic membrane compensates for fluid volume changes. The system is designed to prevent bubble formation within the fluid's verified temperature range of −30 °C to +60 °C.
The compass should be installed as far as practically possible from magnetic fields, moving ferrous objects, and other equipment that could affect the reading. Professional compass calibration is recommended after installation. During disassembly, only the two slotted screws should be loosened; the Phillips screws for the compensation magnet mounts must not be loosened.
Cleaning should be done with a soft cloth dampened with fresh water. Filling plugs and other non-adjustable screws must not be opened. The manufacturer's warranty is 36 months from the production date on the flange. A canvas protective cover with item no. 62.00063.01 is available as an official accessory for the BU4.
