This Riviera 4" high-speed magnetic compass with pedestal base and telescopic protective cover is a liquid-filled steering compass from the Urania 4" series, model BU9/AV. Developed for motorboats and other vessels travelling over 25 knots, it features a black housing and a black compass card.
The compass card has a visible diameter of 4"/100 mm and is graduated in 5° intervals. The course is read from the rear against a red lubber line. The internal gimbal suspension keeps the compass level during vessel movement, while the built-in, manually adjustable magnetic compensation allows for correction of local magnetic influences after installation.
The compass features built-in 12 V lighting, an anti-glare screen, and an integrated, wrap-around telescopic protective cover. The compass liquid is Shell Sol D/70 with a documented stability range from −30 °C to +60 °C. An elastic membrane compensates for liquid volume changes and prevents bubble formation within this temperature range.
The BU9 construction measures 157 mm in maximum width and 157 mm in total height. The compass base is mounted onto a suitable surface through four mounting holes using the included screws. During installation, the two Phillips screws on the side are loosened, the compass is lifted out of the base, and the base is secured. The compass is then placed back, and the cover flange is clicked into place.
After installation, the compass must be compensated by an authorized professional using a non-magnetic screwdriver. The cross-elements beneath the compass hold the compensation magnets and must not be adjusted by unqualified personnel. Filler plugs and other screws must not be loosened. The model is recommended for boats up to 10.5 m, and the balancing zone should be checked before use outside the Northern Hemisphere.
The compass is manufactured in Italy and is repairable, but repairs must be carried out by the manufacturer. Cleaning should be performed with a soft cloth dampened with fresh water. The warranty is 36 months from the date of manufacture, with the applicable exclusions for, among other things, improper use, incorrect installation, and accidental breakage. The BU9 is not MED/Wheelmark certified.
