This Riviera White Star 5″ pedestal-mount magnetic compass is model BW2/AV, developed as a high-speed version for vessels traveling over 25 knots. The visible compass card has a diameter of 130 mm and a 5° graduation, while the rear-reading feature makes the compass suitable for placement in front of the steering position.
The compass is liquid-filled and features internal gimbal suspension, which keeps the compass card horizontal during the boat's movements. An elastic diaphragm compensates for volume changes in the liquid and prevents bubble formation within the liquid's stable temperature range of −30 °C to +60 °C. The compass liquid is Shell Sol D/70.
The built-in 24 V LED lighting features blue light and allows for reading in the dark. The compass also includes a white lubber line, anti-glare screen, and built-in manual magnetic compensation. The standard balancing is zone A, which primarily covers the northern hemisphere.
The BW2/AV is mounted on a horizontal surface via the pedestal's four mounting holes and secured with the included screws. The mounting location should be chosen as far as possible from magnetic fields, electrical equipment, and movable ferrous objects. After installation, the compass must be compensated by an authorized professional, and a non-magnetic screwdriver must be used when adjusting the compensator screws.
The compass measures 188 mm in total height, 169 mm in width at the upper part, and 181 mm at the base. The black housing is manufactured in Italy, and the BW2 construction is demountable and repairable. The filling plugs and screws for the compass liquid must not be loosened.
The BW2 product family is covered by RINA EC type approval MED151722CS/005 as a Class B magnetic compass for lifeboats and rescue boats. The approval covers, among others, ISO 1069:1973, ISO 25862:2019, and IEC 60945:2002 including Corrigendum 1:2008. An individual MED certificate must be ordered together with the compass and is not documented as part of the standard delivery.
Clean the compass with a soft cloth dampened with fresh water. The warranty period is 36 months from the production date, which is stamped on the flange, and repairs must be performed by Riviera Srl Genova so as not to affect the warranty. White protective cover 62.00117.01 and textile protective cap 62.00062.01 are available as separate accessories and are not included.
