Riviera White Star BW1 5" flush-mount compass is a magnetic steering compass in a standard version for horizontal, flush-mounted installation. The model has a visible 130 mm compass card, 5° graduation, and is recommended for vessels up to 14 m and operation under 25 knots.
The black, flat compass card is read from behind and features a white lubber line. Internal gimbal suspension stabilizes the compass during vessel movement, while the built-in manual magnetic compensation allows for correction of local magnetic interference. An anti-glare screen improves readability under varying lighting conditions.
The built-in LED lighting is designed for 24 V and provides blue light. The lighting is connected via two wires, and the vessel's mains voltage must be checked before connection.
The compass has a diameter of 180 mm over the flange, a housing and mounting diameter of 155 mm, a total height of 182 mm, and an installation depth of 115 mm. It is mounted in a cutout in a console, deck, or other horizontal surface using the included drilling template. The mounting location should be as far as possible from magnetic fields and moving ferrous parts. After installation, the compass must be professionally compensated.
The compass is liquid-filled with Shell Sol D/70 and designed for a temperature range of −30 °C to +60 °C. An elastic diaphragm compensates for volume changes in the liquid and prevents bubble formation within the range. Filling plugs and screws must not be loosened; the compensator screws must be operated with a non-magnetic screwdriver.
The White Star BW1 is manufactured in Italy and designed to be repairable. Repairs must be carried out by Riviera to maintain the warranty and safety. The manufacturer's warranty is 3 years from the production date, which is stamped on the flange. The model is covered by MED Directive 2014/90/EU, but an individual MED certificate must be ordered separately with the compass.
