This Riviera White Star BW2 5″ binnacle magnetic compass is a Class B magnetic compass with 2° graduation for the merchant marine and fishing vessels. The variant features a removable compass card and is supplied with an individual RINA test certificate for each compass.
The compass is mounted in a binnacle and features internal gimbal suspension, rear reading, and a white lubber line. The black compass card is illuminated by blue LED light at 24 V. The anti-glare screen improves readability, while the built-in manual compensation makes it possible to correct the influence of the vessel's magnetic fields after installation.
The BW2 housing measures 188 mm in height, 169 mm across the upper housing, and 181 mm at the base. The product class is 5″ with a catalog-stated visible diameter of 130 mm. The compass bowl is made of glass-fiber reinforced nylon, while the spherical dome is made of polycarbonate. The internal construction includes two magnetic elements, four adjustment magnets, and petroleum-based Shell Sol D 70 compass fluid.
The compass fluid is stable from −30 °C to +60 °C. An elastic membrane compensates for volume changes in the fluid and prevents bubble formation within this temperature range. Filling plugs and sealing screws must not be loosened, and the compensator screws must be adjusted with a non-magnetic screwdriver.
The binnacle is fastened through four mounting holes using the supplied screws. The compass should be positioned as far as practically possible from magnetic fields and moving ferrous objects. After installation, it must be compensated by a professional authorized by the relevant maritime authority. Riviera 5″ compasses are recommended as a guide for vessels up to 14 meters.
The compass is hand-assembled in Italy and designed to be repairable. It should be cleaned with a soft cloth dampened with fresh water. A white protective cover with item no. 62.00117.01 and a canvas protective cover with item no. 62.00062.01 are available as separate accessories.
