This Riviera Zenit 3″ magnetic compass, model BH1/AV, is a black, front-reading boat compass for horizontal flush mounting. The high-speed version is intended for navigation in leisure and smaller motorboats up to 8 meters.
The visible compass card has a diameter of 80 mm and a graduation of 5°. Internal gimbal suspension helps the compass card remain level during rolling, pitching, and changes in the boat's trim. The built-in manual compensation system makes it possible to correct for the boat's magnetic influences after installation.
The compass has built-in 12 V LED lighting with blue light, so the heading can be read in the dark. The compass fluid is Shell Sol D/70, and an elastic membrane compensates for volume changes in the fluid to prevent bubble formation in the temperature range of −30 °C to +60 °C.
The compass measures 139 mm across its largest outer width and has a total height of 121 mm. The installation depth is 65 mm, the lower installation part is 89 mm wide, and the required panel cutout is Ø95 mm.
The mounting location must be placed as far as practically possible from magnetic fields, electrical equipment, and moving ferrous parts. The LED wires must only be connected after checking the boat's mains voltage. After installation, the compass must be professionally compensated via the available compensator screws using a non-magnetic screwdriver.
The compass is hand-assembled and quality-checked in Genoa, Italy, and can be repaired by Riviera. It is type-approved according to Italian Ministerial Order 388 of 29 September 1999. An individual MED certificate must be ordered with the compass and is therefore not included automatically. The manufacturer's warranty is three years from the production date with correct installation and use.
