This Riviera Zenith BZ3 pedestal-mounted magnetic compass 3″ is a liquid-filled navigation compass for pedestal mounting on sailboats and motorboats. The standard version features a black housing, a flat black compass card, and a visible compass card diameter of 80 mm. The compass is recommended for boats up to 8 meters.
The compass card has 5° graduations and is read from above through the dome. The internal gimbal system keeps the compass stable during boat movement, while the integrated manual compensation allows a professional to correct for magnetic interference after installation. An anti-glare screen reduces distracting reflections during reading.
The compass has 12 V lighting for reading in the dark. The lighting technology is not specified for this variant. The compass liquid is Shell Sol D/70, and an elastic diaphragm compensates for volume changes in the liquid to prevent bubble formation. The liquid is stable in the temperature range from −30 °C to +60 °C.
The compass measures 127 mm in outer width and 124 mm in total height. The pedestal is secured through four mounting holes using the included screws. The mounting location should be chosen as far as practically possible from magnetic fields and moving ferrous parts. The boat's supply voltage must be checked before connecting the two lighting wires.
After mounting, the compass must be compensated by a qualified professional. The internal cross-elements carry the compensation magnets and must not be adjusted by unskilled persons. Filling plugs and other screws must not be loosened; only the designated compensator screws may be adjusted.
The compass is hand-built in Italy and designed to be repairable. It should be cleaned with a soft cloth dampened with fresh water. The warranty period is 36 months from the production date stamped on the flange. The manufacturer's part number for this standard variant with a black housing and black card is 62.00148.01. A canvas protective cover with manufacturer part no. 62.00064.01 can be used, but is not included.
The compass is type-approved according to Ministerial Order 388 of 29 September 1999. Zenith class B compasses, with the exception of the BZT, meet MED 2014/90/EU; an individual MED certificate must be ordered with the compass and is therefore not included automatically.
