Seaflo Anti-Siphon with Ventilation – Safety against Backflow in Marine Systems

A Seaflo Vented Anti-Siphon is a critical safety device that prevents unwanted backflow of water and fluids into your boat's systems. It protects against the so-called "siphon effect", where fluid is sucked back into a system even when the pump is off. This is especially important for components located below or near the waterline.

Where is a Vented Anti-Siphon Typically Used?

Vented anti-siphons are primarily used in situations where there is a risk of liquid accidentally flowing backwards and causing damage:

  • Engine Cooling System: If a boat engine is located below or near the waterline, cooling water can backflow into the engine when it is turned off. This can cause serious water damage to the engine and, in the worst case scenario, can lead to the boat sinking. A vented anti-siphon breaks the siphon effect by allowing air to enter the hose when the water flow stops, thus preventing water from flowing backwards.
  • Marine Toilets: If a marine toilet is installed below or at the waterline, a siphon effect can occur, where seawater is sucked back into the toilet and potentially into the boat. The vented anti-siphon prevents this by "venting" the system when the toilet is not in use.
  • Septic Tanks and Bilge Pumps: Similar principles apply to septic tanks and bilge pumps, where an anti-siphon can prevent unwanted backflow of water or wastewater, which can lead to odor nuisance or pollution.

How Does It Work?

A vented anti-siphon is typically a "loop" or U-shaped tube that is installed at the highest point in the hose system, at least 20-50 cm above the water line. At the top of this loop is a small valve (often a "duckbill" valve) that allows air to enter the hose when the pump or system is not under pressure (i.e. when the water flow stops). This air pocket breaks the water column in the hose and prevents water from "siphoning" back. When the system is in use, the valve closes and allows water to flow normally.

Why is it Important?

A vented anti-siphon is an important safety measure to protect your boat from water damage, engine failure and ultimately, potential sinking. It is relatively inexpensive to install and can save you from expensive repairs and dangerous situations. It is a small investment that provides great peace of mind.
