This portable anemometer from Skywatch, model Wind, is a compact handheld measuring instrument for quick measurement of wind speed, air temperature, and perceived temperature. The instrument weighs only 30 g and can be used independently without a smartphone, cables, or external power supply.
Wind speed is measured via the rotating impeller and can be displayed in m/s, km/h, mph, or knots. The measuring range is 3–185 km/h with an accuracy of ±3% of full scale. The display can show the current wind speed, the maximum wind speed during the current use, and the highest recorded wind speed. The Beaufort scale is displayed graphically as a bar.
The temperature function covers –30 °C to +70 °C and can be displayed in °C or °F. The instrument also calculates wind chill so that the perceived temperature can be assessed based on the air temperature and wind conditions. Both wind and temperature measurements are updated every 0.5 seconds.
The high-contrast LCD display is operated with a single combined on/off and mode button. The last used display mode is reloaded at the next startup. Automatic switch-off reduces battery consumption, and the factory-installed 3 V lithium battery is dimensioned for at least 250,000 measurements.
The housing is IP67-rated, buoyant, and resistant to dust and impact. The instrument measures 41 × 109 × 17 mm and comes with a carrying strap. The impeller can be replaced, making it possible to service the moving measuring part. The product is designed and manufactured in Switzerland and comes with a 2-year warranty.
To achieve the most accurate wind measurement, the instrument must be aligned with the axis of the wind so that the airflow passes unhindered through the impeller. Sand, hair, and threads should be kept away from the impeller. Dust and sand can be rinsed off carefully with clean water, while the temperature sensor should not be touched.
