This portable anemometer from Skywatch is the Eole 1 model, which measures instantaneous, maximum, and average wind speed. The measuring range is 2–150 km/h, and the result can be displayed in km/h, mph, m/s, fps, knots, or Beaufort. The instrument is suitable as a handheld wind meter for activities such as sailing and others where wind conditions must be assessed directly on-site.
The large digital display shows the instantaneous wind speed at the top, the maximum value in the middle, and the average at the bottom. The averaging period can be selected from 3 seconds to 24 hours or controlled via the timer function. The display features manually operated backlighting and a low battery indicator. The instrument does not have an automatic shut-off and does not support storage or export of measurement data.
Wind measurement is performed using a multidirectional rotor with a diameter of 54 mm. The rotor is detected via its rotating magnetic field and therefore does not require precise orientation along the wind axis. The highest sensitivity is achieved in a vertical position, while optimal precision is obtained with the rotor's axis of rotation perpendicular to the wind direction. Strong magnetic fields from sources such as motors and transformers can affect the measurement.
The instrument measures Ø 65 × 155 mm and weighs 235 g. The construction is sealed, weather and water-resistant, and buoyant, though immersion should only be brief. The removable protective cap protects the rotor during transport and storage and must be removed before measurement. The base is made of aluminum and features an integrated 1/4″ thread for mounting on a standard photo or camera tripod.
Power is supplied by 2 replaceable 1.5 V AA/LR6 batteries. The battery life is at least approximately three years with occasional use of the display lighting. The operating temperature is −20 to +70 °C; this indicates the instrument's permitted operating range and is not a temperature measurement function.
The Eole 1 has a wind measurement accuracy of ±3% FS and displays one decimal place up to 99.9, after which values are displayed as whole units. The instrument comes with official Swiss calibration. The rotor, shaft, and rotor holder can be serviced and replaced, and a compatible storage case as well as a 54 mm replacement rotor are available as accessories.
