This Solas aluminum Duoprop propeller set A4 for Volvo Penta DP 280/290 is a complete, counter-rotating propeller set for diesel engines. The set consists of a 3-blade front propeller and a 4-blade rear propeller, which are mounted together on the same Duoprop drive.
The front propeller has a diameter of 15.5", a pitch of 17", left-hand rotation, and 27 splines. The rear propeller has a diameter of 13.75", a pitch of 19", right-hand rotation, and 19 splines. The documented A4 combination consists of Solas front propeller 8512-155-17 and Solas rear propeller 8513-138-19.
Both propellers are manufactured from pressure-cast aluminum. The manufacturing process provides a material with very low porosity, while four layers of surface protection protect against corrosion. The series has been tested for more than 500 hours in salt spray testing. The propellers have a fixed, pressed-in rubber bushing and are designed without through-hub exhaust.
The set fits Volvo Penta Duoprop DP 280 and DP 290 drives and belongs to Duoprop type A. Type A is intended for diesel engines up to 200 hp. The model code A4 indicates a specific combination of diameter and pitch; the correct propeller selection also depends on the engine, gear ratio, boat, load, and maximum RPM.
The OEM reference for the complete A4 set is Volvo Penta 854767. The separate original references are 854777 for the front propeller and 854787 for the rear propeller. Previous numbers are 852235 and 852237, respectively. Types A, B, and J, as well as different size codes, must not be mixed on the same drive. Furthermore, A4 cannot be automatically replaced by J4, as the size codes cannot be transferred directly between the series.
Original installation hardware is used, and special tools may be required. Relevant hardware may include M16 or M20 propeller cone kits depending on the drive's shaft design, as well as spacer ring 853676 for type A. It is not documented whether installation hardware is included.
