This SOLAS aluminum Duoprop propeller set type B in size B4 is a complete set of two counter-rotating propellers for Volvo Penta Aquamatic Duoprop drives DP 280 and DP 290. The set is intended as a compatible replacement for Volvo Penta OEM propeller set 854817 and can be used with both gasoline and diesel engines.
The propellers are manufactured from aluminum with thin blade profiles and a squeeze-cast construction. The front propeller is left-hand rotating, while the rear propeller is right-hand rotating. This counter-rotation is a central part of the Duoprop system's function, and the two propellers must be used as a matching SOLAS pair with the same B4 size code.
The B4 combination consists of front propeller 8512-153-19 with a diameter of 15.3″, 19″ pitch, 27 splines and three blades, as well as rear propeller 8513-138-19 with a diameter of 13.75″, 19″ pitch and 19 splines. Depending on the specific delivery, the outer propeller may have three or four blades; the blade count should therefore be checked upon receipt. Both propellers have a pressed-in rubber bushing and are designed without through-hub exhaust.
Type B is intended for Volvo Penta DP 280/290 and is used for gasoline and diesel engines. For diesel engines, the type is rated for up to 230 hp. The correct B-size also depends on the engine's RPM, gear ratio, boat type, weight, and attained speed. At speeds over 35 knots, a stainless steel type C propeller is generally recommended.
Front and rear propellers must not be combined with different size codes. Installation may require special tools, and the drive's prescribed tightening torques must be followed. Furthermore, check the clearance to the gear housing and any trim fin before use.
