This StingRay StarFire hydrofoil stabilizer, model StarFire-3, is a grey motor stabilizer for outboards and sterndrives from 40–300 hp. It mounts to the engine's anti-cavitation plate and is designed to stabilize the boat and reduce time-to-plane.
The StarFire profile features lift level 2, providing moderate lift. The inverted trailing edge is designed to reduce drag, while the extended wing tips contribute to stability while planing. The design can also make it possible to keep the boat on plane at lower speeds.
The hydrofoil's lift can reduce bow rise and improve visibility at low speeds. It can also improve acceleration from a standstill, reduce porpoising, chinewalking, cavitation, and ventilation, as well as contribute to lower fuel consumption. Time-to-plane can be reduced by up to 50%.
The primary installation is performed without drilling. The hydrofoil is pushed forward over the anti-cavitation plate and secured with two stainless set screws into brass threaded inserts. An Allen key is included. Alternatively, it can be mounted using two drilled holes with 1/4"-20 × 1.5" stainless bolts, stainless washers, and nylon-insert lock nuts; this method requires a 1/4" drill bit.
During installation, the engine must be off, the kill switch disconnected, and the gear selector in neutral. After mounting, the propeller must be rotated slowly by hand to check for free clearance. The hydrofoil's attachment should be checked before and after each trip, and the set screws tightened if necessary, without over-tightening.
The stabilizer is made of plastic and features molded-in StarFire graphics with a glitter effect. The product is made in the USA and comes with a one-year limited warranty to the original purchaser against significant material and manufacturing defects. Proof of purchase is required.
