Aluminum anodes have some advantages over traditional zinc anodes. The alloy that the aluminum anode is made of has a greater negative charge than zinc, as well as a longer lifespan, which means that the anode is more active and over a longer period of time. In total, an aluminum anode produces about 70% more amp/hours over its lifetime than a corresponding traditional zinc anode. As a side benefit, you halve the weight and save a little on the price.
NB: There must be no physical connection between aluminium and zinc anodes, as the aluminium anode will in such a case protect the zinc anode. Therefore, all anodes on, for example, drives and outboard motors must be made of either aluminium or zinc.
Many manufacturers use aluminum anodes as standard today on their new engines and boats, for example Mercruiser, Mercury, Yanmar, Selva, Torqeedo, Princess and Sunseeker.
