Ultraflex T85 mechanical rotary steering helm with black hub cap is a cable-based steering unit for boats with outboard motors, inboard motors, or SX/sterndrives. It is intended for a maximum boat speed of 50 MPH and has approximately 3 turns lock-to-lock.
The rotary mechanism works with a single steering cable and provides a cable stroke of 228 mm. The design provides minimal feedback and is suitable where space behind the dashboard is limited. The steering helm is mounted at a 90° angle and can be used with steering wheels up to Ø406 mm. The dish of the steering wheel must not exceed 127 mm.
Installation requires four Ø7 mm mounting holes and one central Ø67 mm hole. The documented minimum clearances around the steering shaft are 100, 150, and 255 mm. The included drill template must be used for positioning the holes.
Steering cable and steering wheel are not included. The steering helm is used with an M66 steering cable or a compatible M90 Mach steering cable of the correct length. M66 cables can be found under part numbers 45.185.07–45.185.25, while M90 Mach cables are found under 45.186.07–45.186.25. A complete system also requires an engine-specific connection or mounting kit.
The steering cable must be routed as directly as possible and with the fewest possible bends. The minimum cable bend radius is 200 mm; smaller radii increase friction and can shorten the life of the cable. The steering helm must not be disassembled during cable installation. The system should be inspected annually by a qualified marine technician.
The package contents include T85 steering helm, mounting hardware, black hub cap, mounting screws, nuts, washers, tube, bushing, and key. The construction is made of corrosion-resistant materials. The product's standard references include EN 28848, ISO 8848, and ABYC P17, and the model is CE marked.
